How to Start a SaaS (with little money)

2024 edition

I remember the first time I had an idea for a software

but I knew I couldn’t even attempt it, because I didn’t have nearly enough funds to get it developed

and for the longest time, software has been a game exclusively played by people that already had a lot of money

you had to already be successful to play the game of software, and if you became someone able to play the game, you had the chance at the best rewards (big fat exits)

but unless you knew how to develop and market software yourself, or had 10’s of thousands if not hundreds of thousands liquid, or the ability to raise capital

software was a game that you could not play

but no code changes that

now virtually anyone can learn how to build software themselves on no code tools like softr, glide, bubble, flutterflow, weweb, etc or only have to pay a fraction to get things developed on no code

so no code democratizes the building aspect of starting a software company

but you still need to also learn:

  • how to find winning ideas

  • how to validate them

  • how to go to market and find product market fit messaging

  • how to build a customer acquisition ecosystem (only way to get customers in 2024)

  • how to hire

  • how to create feedback loops

  • management

  • how to exit

  • and a whole lot more

the truth is, starting and running a software company isn’t easy, in fact it’s very hard

that’s why software gets the biggest multiples, it’s the most desirable business to have

higher barrier to entry, monthly recurring revenue, low churn if done right

it’s a super attractive business model, certainly not an easy one

as someone that’s been doing this for 3 years, I’ve made more mistakes and learned more than running any other business

and that’s why for my latest software (my power dialer) I’m documenting it live on youtube and even more in depth in my private group no code accelerator

with a literal day by day blue print of how I grow it (onboarding 3 customers today (; )

if you’ve been on the fence about starting a SaaS, now is the time

build a SaaS for 2-3 years, sell it, rinse and repeat

ultimately, all roads leads to enterprise value

if you cannot sell your current business, you do not run a business, you are an internet hustler

a real business has enterprise value and can run without the founder and be sold to a new owner easily

even if you don’t plan to sell, the same is true, if it can’t run without you, it’s not a business
